Boston College: Coding as Another Language Evaluation
Project Type
Curriculum Evaluation
Date
2019-2024
Location
Boston, Masschusetts; State of Rhode Island
Shaffer Evaluation Group served as the external evaluator for Coding as Another Language, a multi-year research initiative led by the DevTech Research Group at Boston College. This innovative project brought together computer science, storytelling, and the arts to help young children (K–2) learn to code through creative expression.
At the heart of the curriculum is ScratchJr, a visual programming language designed for children ages 5–7. Using block-based coding, students create their own interactive stories, animations, and games—integrating computational thinking with early literacy, narrative structure, and visual design. The curriculum is deeply rooted in creative learning, enabling children to develop both technical and artistic skills.
In partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Education and Boston Public Schools, the project was implemented in classrooms across both regions. Teachers received training to deliver the curriculum, while district leaders were supported in sustaining the work beyond the grant period. A randomized controlled trial measured impact on coding ability, computational thinking, and English language comprehension.
